The history of the Dan SCISM Scholarship begins in 1966 with a visionary decision by Dan SCISM, then editor of the Courier & Press and founder of the Evansville City Golf Tournament. Rather than allowing surplus tournament proceeds to remain unused, Dan SCISM chose to invest those funds in something far more meaningful—higher education. His vision was simple yet powerful: to award all excess tournament funds to a deserving young man to help support his college education. From the outset, Dan SCISM established clear and intentional criteria. The scholarship would be awarded to a student who demonstrated academic excellence, strength of character, and—most importantly—financial need. Since its inception, the Dan SCISM Scholarship has made a lasting impact. From 1966 forward, 86 young men have received scholarship support through this program. However, by 2014, it became clear that the scholarship needed to evolve. At that time, typical awards ranged from $5,000 to $7,000—amounts that no longer provided meaningful assistance given the rapidly increasing cost of higher education. Recognizing this challenge, the organization launched a renewed effort in 2014. Individuals and corporations were invited to contribute $1,000 donations with a bold goal: to increase the scholarship award to $36,000. In just four short years, that goal was achieved—an extraordinary testament to the generosity and shared commitment of the community. Today, the Dan SCISM Scholarship is primarily based on financial need and is fully renewable. Funds are set aside specifically for each recipient, provided they continue to meet established academic and conduct standards. Scholars are required to submit annual transcripts, maintain a minimum academic threshold, and remain in good standing with their university. While accountability is essential, the program’s success speaks for itself—of the 14 recipients under the renewed scholarship model, only one scholarship has ever been revoked. We are proud to share that in 2026, the Dan SCISM Scholarship will reach a remarkable milestone: nearly $500,000 in scholarships awarded to deserving students. This achievement reflects decades of dedication, integrity, and belief in the power of education. The organization typically meets three times each year : a spring meeting, an August banquet where the scholarship recipient is formally presented, and a November meeting to close out the year.
